The Florida Department of Transportation firmly believes that improving one's community is best accomplished through a strong partnership and open communication between government and the people it serves.

US 17 Design Begins

The FDOT is now designing the improvements to US 17 from the DeSoto County line to Sweetwater Road (County Road 634) in Hardee County. The US 17 project design will enhance safety, increase capacity and incorporate drainage improvements to reduce flooding. US 17 is an important part of the Florida Interstate Highway System (FIHS) and the Strategic Intermodal System (SIS), a critical evacuation route and a key factor contributing to the area economy.

Improvements to US 17 will include expanding the roadway to provide a four-lane rural typical section with a 64-foot median. The bridge over Charlie Creek will be widened and used for the northbound lanes. The bridge over Charlie Creek Overflow will be brought up to current standards by widening or reconstruction. New southbound bridges over Charlie Creek and Charlie Creek Overflow will be constructed.
